So I already knew that it didn't want to come out of 2wd when I noticed it refused to shift into 4L and 4H, however I do not need to use anything but 2wd until the winter time so I wasn't to concerned for now. Yesterday, when installing a radio I accidentally hit the Auto4wd button and now it's stuck there. I managed to get it into 2wd after numerous button pushes, but after I shut it off and start it up again... back in Auto4wd.

My question is when I finally get it back into 2wd is there a quick solution to keep it there until I'm ready to fix the overall issue?

How long has it been since you changed the auto-trac 2 fluid? When it gets old it can cause issues going into and out of 4wd. I had one time also where I went though a car wash and the switch was blinking in neutral...scary. I pulled the fuse and put it back in after a few minutes and it seemed to reset it. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure how it operates, if it needs the fuse in there to stay in 2wd or not. In the side panel of the dash there is a 15 amp fuse labeled 4WD.

If you are getting good shift motor transfer case shifts sometimes then your fuse for the that circuit is good and your problem most likely is in the shift motor itself. The system is lost and doesnt know at times what gear (transfer case) is physically in. That info is reported to the 4wd module via the encoder ring (inside the transfer case shift motor assembly).
Have a look at this thread: http://www.tahoeyukonforum.com/threads/the-dreaded-service-4wd-message.92644/#post-1110046

^^ X2 most likely TC shift motor. Had same issues with mine and a new shift motor cured it. Not difficult at all to replace.

Update: since last post, truck was stuck in 4hi, wouldn't come out, we tried a new switch, nothing. So we swapped out out the transfer case module, now we are stuck back in auto4wd; back to square 1.. any suggestions...

Did you ever change out the fluid and make sure it had auto-trak 2 in it? The blue stuff? People never believe me when I say as it gets old/dirty it'll cause problems.
EDIT: Did you change out the motor or the control module? My money is on the motor if you already did the module. I'd still do a fluid change with the new motor though.
