Have you checked in the owner's manual? It's what I've been doing, there's a lot of unknown buttons up top on my 02 tahoe and I have no clue what they do....

If you are talking about the one that's under the center console lid, then that's the one that activates a little light inside of the console whenever the headlights are on so you can see in there at night!! If it doesn't do that, then you need to replace the little bulb behind the light cover!

If that's not what you are talking about, then post up a pic!

I think I know what he's talking about. Is it a rubber button with a white dot on it and a little green light just to the left? I just bought an 01 tahoe and out of curiosity I pressed it and terns out its for a hands free device for your phone. I don't know how to set it up, but if anyone knows a out this it would be helpful.
