Switched to Nitto Ridge Grapplers-Sizing way off

Well I went into Discount Tire to get some wheel vibration looked at and ended up talking about the Nitto Ridge Grapplers and they gave me an opportunity to take a little loss on my Nitto 295/70/18 G2 and try a slightly smaller 285/70/18 Nitto Ridge Grappler. I have been seeing a lot of RG pics and I was kind of digging the Tread design and sidewall. I figured I’d lose .3 inches in height and that would hardly be noticeable and it would help with what little rubbing I had with the G2’s.

fast forward to the install and really like the tire look, but it’s measurements ended up being about a whole inch shorter in diameter vs the .3 inch. Now I don’t know what to do bc the tires look great but definitely don’t fill my fenderwell like my
Original goal was in selecting tire size. Anyone have experience with this? Can I go to discount and have them replace the tire for something closer to the specs or am I just out the money to upgrade and stuck with a under spec tire now?! These 285/70/18 ridge grapplers are supposed to be 33.9” tall and they’re just at 33” with the tape measure. If they were true to spec and 33.9 I think I’d be in love. My 295/70/18 G2 measured right at 34.1”.

Took some haggling but I got DISCOUNT to refund the $1000 upgrade and put the G2’s back on. I measured an employees 295/70/18 Ridge Grapplers and they too were way under spec by almost an inch. Didn’t wanna give up that filled fender look the G2’s had.

heads up to anyone looking at Ridge Grapplers on sizing being close to spec

should be more like 33.7 rather than 33.9 and your 295 should be more like 34.3. regardless maximum tire height is measured without weight on the tire and they are also a general sizing. overall tire size can be effected by the rim width also. a thinner rim can squish the tire making it taller and a wider rim will pull the sidewalls out pulling the diameter inward a bit. overall combined it is possible to see roughly an inch size difference than what your expecting. regardless if you nail the look your after dont mess with whats not broken

Nitto specs the Ridge Grappler LT285/70r18 at 33.98" inflated diameter with a recommended rim width of 8.5". Nitto lists the "approved rim size" for the LT285/70r18 at 7.5-(8.5)-9.5.

Running the 18x9.5 wheels puts you at the high end of the spectrum - perhaps that is causing this "sidewall pulling inward" as mentioned by @drakon543 and the resulting loss of overall inflated tire diameter...

Yeah it was weird. I was using the Nitto site for tire specs like above mentioned. Nitto shows the 295/70/18 to be 34.29 and on my 9.5 rim it measured pretty close at just over 34.0” with a tape measure. So one would ASSUME (where we get in trouble) the Nitto specs would hold true on the same rim in a different size. However those 285/70/ RG’s only measured 33.0” (Nitto specs say 33.9”)

Well if they run a bit smaller, but you like the look of the ridge grapplers, why not just get the next size up?

for sure LOVED the look of the G2 size combo...but if i had rubbing issues at all, i would have stayed with the RG. Either way, it looked great, wish you would have had a full side shot of the RG when installed ??
