I have a 1996 5.7 Tahoe when braking the brakes are really good but when I have slowed down to about 5mph using the brakes the pedal goes hard and there is a groaning noise coming from the brakes, if I release the pedal and press again the problem clears, does anybody have any ideas.

Is it a grinding noise? Did you check the pads? Possible caliper getting stuck?

Is it a 4wd? If so, your front hubs are bad! Its most likely a bad speed sensor which is causing the ABS to engage a slow speeds, because the system can't accurately determine wheel speed anymore. it's a very common issue on these trucks. I know the 2WD can do the same thing, but it's a much cheaper fix.

Basically, if it is your hubs, buy a new set and bolt it on. The only special tools you'll need are a big socket for the axle nut (32mm i believe). Then theres only three more bolts on each hub that hold it on. Really simple job.

I fixed the problem on my truck, the discs and pads were worn so I replaced them with Bremo discs and pads, also whilst it was apart I pulled the ABS sensors out and cleaned off the rust layer between the senor and the hub (read that somewhere on this forum) and the brakes are now spot on.
