Well guys, I knew this day would prolly come sooner rather than later. Need your advice to see what my next course of action should be:

My 96 Yukon has 152,000 on the clock, and to my knowledge, the tranny has never been rebuilt. Always had a pretty good "clunk" when putting it in reverse, which I know is a sign that the tranny may be about to go.

Today, on my way to work, I stopped in at a gas station, ran in. Came back out, headed off down the highway. As I was accelerating, my truck wouldn't get out of 3rd gear. So I was concerned obviously.

Kept on going, just trying to make it work. About 5 miles later, my truck finally shifts into 4th, but the SES light comes on, and it won't shift into overdrive. So I guess my torque converter is toast.

So, what to do? I can't rebuild a tranny, and this is my DD. I do have a good shop locally, but I'm thinking I might want to go with a "new" tranny. Any advice? I'm not going to mod the engine or anything like. No 383 in my future, so what would you suggest my next step be?

Thanks!

Thanks Ironman. I'll look that guy up.

I might add that I plan to keep my Yukon forever. You can buy a lot of $4.00 gasoline for a paid for truck. Imagine the guys who have a $500 dollar truck payment for a truck that gets 20 mpg, and now have to pay $4 for a gallon of gas.

But I digress...any other advice will definitely be considered.

There is NOTHING wrong with a rebuilt tranny ... do you really think your "new" one is all 100% completely new inside?? Any tranny shop is gonna be rebuilding good cores. Besides that a good rebuilder is going to address some of the factory shortcomings and you wind up with a tranny better then the factory produced.

I knew the day would finally come

Why are you driving around in O.D. ? ? You just confermed why I only use O D when I am going to be on the freeway. I even leave it in 3rd manually ALL THE TIME unless the RPM's are getting over like 2400. The trans has to shift and lock in and out so many times that unless your on the interstate you can drive around all day long in town in 3rd gear. I have a 95 with 191500 mi. and I'm sure it is the original. If you tow stuff in O D. you can only blame yourself.

If your trans is locking in and out all the time driving around town Jonny you have tranny issues.

unknown at this time.
I would suggest you first get the codes diagnosed to determines exactly what is wrong first. Perhaps it may not be so bad as you think. You obviously have codes explaining the problem. Get a local shop or parts store to help you extract the codes.

do not go with maddog transmissions...they are complete shit..take a look on performancetrucks.net or just search their name on google..tons of problems with them..

either go to your local trans shop, get a rebuild on it, go with a new trans from gm, or get ahold of Finish line transmissions..they are the premier trans 4l60e builder...performabuilt trans is good as well
