Hey all,
I have a '99 Tahoe 2dr with the factory stereo head unit (cassette with remote CD player). It's worked brilliantly since I bought the truck last October. In December I replaced all four speakers with newer ones, and overall was pleased with the result (I'm not an audiophile, guys...I just want tunes). It's been great since then.

In the past few days, I've noticed that one of the rear speakers sounded really crappy with any amount of bass, so I diverted all the sound to the front speakers with the fader. Problem solved for the day. Sweet. I would investigate when I had some time.
Evidently the truck had other plans for my time, as they often do, and it didn't wait until the weekend.

Today when I got in to go to work, I was greeted with silence. Nothing. Nada.
The radio's display says that I'm tuning in stations, but no sound anywhere. Nothing from the CD player either. Spins the CD just fine and the head unit recognizes it, but no sound at all.

Lately I've noticed that I'm having problems receiving radio stations that had not previously been a problem. Another clue?
I don't crank my music loud at all, so I'm pretty sure the crappy sound from the rear speaker is not because it's blown.

So, now I'm wondering if my rear speakers were trying to warn me of the impending death of my head unit. I'm pretty sure these 2-doors do not have any remote amplifiers from the factory...all the wiring goes directly from the head unit to the speakers from what I have been able to learn from reading in this forum.

Is my head unit toast? Or is there another known issue with these things that maybe I'm overlooking? If there were a shorted speaker somewhere, would it kill the entire system? Is this a common failure with these beasts?

Sorry I'm so loaded with questions, but thought I would save time and just toss 'em all out at once.

Thanks folks!

Thanks SunlitComet! I was hoping you'd see this one. ;-)
Yeah, your conclusion is sort of what I suspected also. I just don't have the long experience with these trucks to know if I was fighting something common or not.

Do you know if a Double-DIN head unit will fit these trucks, or is there enough room in the bezel to fit it above the heater controls?

Thanks again

Cool...I'll check that flux capacitor. If I can get the flux capacitor up and running and make time travel possible, then I can travel back in time to when the danged radio still worked! ;-)

SunlitComet, thanks for the link to the install page. I'll check it out.

Always the best help out here.

Hey gents, I finally gave up on this (and the flux capacitor) and replaced the head unit with a single-DIN Pioneer unit. Really like it, and the truck sounds better than it ever did with the stock unit.
Luckily I gave up before any flames occurred. :)
Thanks for your help! I've got cruisin' tunes once again.
