Hey all,
I have a '99 Tahoe 2dr with the factory stereo head unit (cassette with remote CD player). It's worked brilliantly since I bought the truck last October. In December I replaced all four speakers with newer ones, and overall was pleased with the result (I'm not an audiophile, guys...I just want tunes). It's been great since then.
In the past few days, I've noticed that one of the rear speakers sounded really crappy with any amount of bass, so I diverted all the sound to the front speakers with the fader. Problem solved for the day. Sweet. I would investigate when I had some time.
Evidently the truck had other plans for my time, as they often do, and it didn't wait until the weekend.
Today when I got in to go to work, I was greeted with silence. Nothing. Nada.
The radio's display says that I'm tuning in stations, but no sound anywhere. Nothing from the CD player either. Spins the CD just fine and the head unit recognizes it, but no sound at all.
Lately I've noticed that I'm having problems receiving radio stations that had not previously been a problem. Another clue?
I don't crank my music loud at all, so I'm pretty sure the crappy sound from the rear speaker is not because it's blown.
So, now I'm wondering if my rear speakers were trying to warn me of the impending death of my head unit. I'm pretty sure these 2-doors do not have any remote amplifiers from the factory...all the wiring goes directly from the head unit to the speakers from what I have been able to learn from reading in this forum.
Is my head unit toast? Or is there another known issue with these things that maybe I'm overlooking? If there were a shorted speaker somewhere, would it kill the entire system? Is this a common failure with these beasts?
Sorry I'm so loaded with questions, but thought I would save time and just toss 'em all out at once.
Thanks folks!
