I took a drive up to New Hampshire this week to visit some very old friends of the family...wasn't sure what to do. I couldn't rent a Harley because the local HD dealer didn't have any rentals available until June 1st. So I remembered back to when I was a kid about 13 years old. We took this old cog train to the top of Mount Washington (I think it's the highest mountain on the east coast...or second highest...something like that).
Anyway....I know there's a road that goes to the top..and every now and again you see a bumper sticker that says "this car climbed Mount Washington".
Lets just say..I had no idea this road was quite that hairy. It's steep as hell, and narrow...especially narrow in some spots.
But I'm mentioning this because I did it in my new (relatively new) Yukon. I've only got about 3600 on the odo, and I'm still getting used to this vehicle. Unlike any automatic I've ever had before, there's no 'Low 1', 'Low 2', etc. Instead, it's got the 'manumatic' thing. I guess this is what I was supposed to use. I popped in in 2nd for the first half the ride going up...up closer to the top, things got steeper, so I was down into 1st. Most of the way, I was between 2500-3000 rpms...and all gauges/temps looked good.
Coming down was a different story. I started in 2nd. Big mistake! I should've had it in first. Running in 2nd, I was using just the brakes to keep myself from falling off the mountain Within a half a mile, I was smelling burning rubber, and saw a little smoke. So, I pulled over and let them cool down. Once I figured that out, I dropped it into first, and let the transmission do most of the braking. It almost seemed like there was some kind of hill decent control thing...not sure...maybe there is...you guys know anything about that?
Anyway..I promise I'll post a couple pics when I get back. Pics don't do this place justice...but I'll post some anyway.
Thanks for listening to my story.
I appreciate any comments!
BTW...little burning brake rubber....you guys don't think I need to buy new pads quite yet do ya I swear, it was only for a minute or so before I stopped to let them cool down.
