You can clean it on the rig. Get a very clean cotton cloth and some carb cleaner and open the throttle plate and clean the areas where the throttle plate seats when closed. Clean the edges of the throttle plate too. A soaking of the cloth and reach in to rub clean is sufficient. Get some Mass Air Flow Sensor cleaner at the parts store and follow directions to clean the MAF. When restart don't be surprised about a higher than normal idle and just drive the rig for 10-15 minutes and the system will relearn and then should be ok.

Try not to move the plate that much. Nooce it once and keep it steady and do your cleaning.

Yeah I recommend it every 15,000 miles or so to keep it nice. It take just a few minutes.

Yup. No need to remove it unless you really want to. I cleaned it while installed and got it looking pretty shiny again. The idle stuff can be a bit scary, but it'll go away after a day or two.

You can open them but do it slowly and don't slam open. 08grey is right, don't open all the way to WOT. Open just enough to do the cleaning. tsuintx is also right about the idle relearn. I have seen it come back to normal within a 10-15 mile trip and I have seen it take longer like he said. If you want to use someone else to hold the pedal it is ok but no WOT and slowly.
