I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 Cummins 4x4 QCSB that had the tranny go out (go figure it's a Dodge) and I need to tow it to the transmission shop which is 2 hours away. Seems that the truck weighs around 6800 or so...wondering if my Tahoe would pull it safely and legally. This is a 2008 Tahoe 4x4 with the 5.3 and towing package.

I believe the towing capacity is around 8000lb for the Tahoe. Guessing you're going to use some kind of a flatbed trailer and that will put you very close to the limit (possibly over).

My GM literature shows that the Tahoe is rated for 8200 tow rating, with a weight distributing platform. But just 5000 lbs if you're towing dead weight on the ball. And the hitch on my '09 Denali shows that the hitch itself is only rated for 5,000 lbs dead weight.

So if you're planning on hauling a 6800 lb truck (Gotta love that Cummins engine, true work horse) you'll probably need a trailer that's going to be 1800-2000 lbs of weight too, for a total towed weight of well past the 8200 lb rating of the Tahoe. And that assumes you'd be using a weight distributing system. If dead weight, you'd be 70% over the capacity of your SUV. Would it do it? Perhaps. Is it safe or legal? Nope and nope

I wouldn't pull a 3/4 ton diesel with a Tahoe.

Check out Uhaul, Home Depot, the likes. They usually have some heavy duty trucks available for rent along with some trailers, ect.

Enterprise Commercial rents 3/4 ton trucks, and allow towing. The regular Enterprise rental specifically prohibits towing. I have several friends who have used Commercial when their own tow vehicles were in the shop and have gotten everything from a 3/4 ton Ford F250 gas to a 3/4 ton Dodge with a Cummins.

Don't forget a really good trailer too.

In the long run might be cheaper and easier to just pay a rollback to deliver the truck for you. Work a deal with someone by letting them pick it up when they're not busy.
