My transmission lines are leaking going to the cooler. I wanted to replace them with upgraded fittings. My question is do the cooler lines need to run through the radiator or can I get a better cooler and bypass the radiator all together? I don't understand the purpose of running them through the radiator if you have a cooler.

running it through the radiator is for getting it up to temp faster and the submerged cooler knocks the initial heat off of the fluid as well.
i put the transcool 40k on my truck, left the lines running through the radiator. before with the factory radiator and cooler i would still see temps 180+ (as intended) but towing anything temps would climb 200+. now most ive seen is like 160* thats really beating on it, stall converter, havent towed anything since but im sure itll be fine .
I havent has any problems with lines/fittings leaking, but there's a member on performancetrucks.net that sells a nice simple install kit for the 40k cooler

Is there a benefit to getting the temp up quicker in a Trans? I always thought that cooler was better? I would preferto keep it simple and run the lines direct to the cooler if it is not going to hurt anything. But if it needs to route through the radiator then I will.

for normal driving its really not a big deal....but mine doesnt like high rpm shifts until the temp is 125ish. and with the big cooler normal driving will only heat transmission up around 140-150 range

and to your original issue with leaking lines... the quick disconnect fittings on the radiator are threaded and you can replace them with oem, or i believe you can find the threaded fittings to AN and then replace the entire line. the fittings on the transcooler behind the front grill i dont think are replaceable,

My lines are leaking at the rubber sections. I bought all new an- fittings and braided lines but I wasn't sure if it would be better to just redo everything and install a new cooler and bypass the radiator. The idea that the radiators can leak internally and cross contaminate makes me want to bypass it for peace of mind.

then go for it, plenty of people have bypassed the radiator. the 40k cooler has been used a lot and has standard threaded in/out. you just need to cut into and adapt the line from the transmission to radiator and route it to the front grill, its all hard line iirc i think 3/8 compression fittings work on it. the return line back to the trans works with the 40k, just need to trim some plastic to move the line over.
