So I'm trying to change the fluid on my NP246 autotrac transfer case, and the location for the fill plug does not seem right...

Number 22 in the diagram:

That doesn't seem high enough to put the 2 quarts the service counter guy said to, but what do I know? I know it's a tight fit under the truck, so I use a piece of 3/8" srugical rubber tubing to allow me to put the bottle up high somewhere and put the hose end in the fill hole.

Anyone that's done this?

it is and it does. remember some of the fluid goes into the big open area on the right side of case where the gearing is at.

Thanks Jonathon, I've been searching the webs and came to the same conclusion while I was out. I just wanted your input since you are all-knowing ;)

Haha :)

So, I pulled the upper plug first, and to my horror, almost a quart of fluid came out!! and it wasn't blue. At least it smelled of gear oil and not tranny fluid. Since it's not tranny fluid, I can hope that my rear output seal is still good. In all, almost 3 quarts drained out, and just less than two went in.

I called my brother (who owned it before me) to ask if he'd had the fluid changed, which he did. I figure Les Schwab did it (he worked there at the time) and they pulled the vss or something off the top to put some gear oil in it. My little surgical hose doodad was worthless in the spot, so I bought one of them lift pump things from O'riellys and that was money well spent.

i would change it again after 100 miles just to make sure you got all of the old diluted down if it was not blue or red. and shift it in to 4lo and hi for a hundred feet (but don't bind the drive-line on dry pavement either) to makes sure any deposits in the shift collars or synchros is out.

Fill plug location sucks the big one.
After I did mine about a week later no more take off from the light clunk.
