Hey guys, there is a pretty gnarly sound coming from my transfer case. It's pretty much sounding like the world is ending inside there. I'm not sure if the chain has stretched or if something broke. It runs/shifts/drives fine with the exception of the case.

I hardly ever use 4WD and drive 99% of the time in 2HI so I'm at a loss for how this could come about so instantaneously. Are there other factors that could contribute to taking out the Tcase?

Also, this is a 1999 2Dr Z71. I'm assuming it's the NP8/NVG248?

Thanks!

The transfer case still spins in 2WD, just doesn’t engage front driveshaft. May be time for a rebuild or look for a used one. How many miles?

a little shy of 260k miles.

I have the 4-option switch to the right of the cluster with 4WD-Auto option. Do you know which one this might be?

Wonder if its the infamous pump rub scenario and all your fluid has leaded out. Not sure how or if it would only affect the 4wd drive option. It sounds like a rebuild may be in your future. I've taken mine out before, its not too bad of a task...

That’s what I was thinking. Pump rub. If you rebuild, make sure to get the pump rub upgrade.

Had to replace the transfer case on my bro-in-laws rig yesterday.
First noticed the odd noise 4 days ago. Then finally, the output shaft ended up half an inch back further than it's supposed to be. The rear bearing case snapped off the transfer case and the shaft was the only thing keeping it from hitting the ground.

This transfer case could not be reused, thus we did not rebuild it. If you choose to rebuild yours (which isn't too difficult), I suggest you invest in a quality pair of "duck-bill" snap ring pliers......the kind that expand the snap ring rather than compressing the snap ring.
