Transmission Fluid change or Flush

What’s up guys

Quick question.

I have a 2004 GMC Yukon XL with 187k. I’ve had it for about 5 Months now with no real issues.

Recently I’ve noticed cold when the trans is put in reverse it feels like neutral. Now mind you this has only happened about 4 times.

I brought it to my mechanic today and he told Me something about a switch letting the trans know what gear has been selected. Maybe I’m explaining it wrong but that’s what I got.

The fluid is not brown or burnt.

He told me he would check that switch and then he suggested a fluid change. From what he’s telling me they have a machine that does this. My questions are:

A-From my understanding it’s a flush when done with the machine. Is this bad for my trans ?

B-Shouldn’t I change all the fluid + filter and gasket instead ?

C-Should I even be looking to have my mechanic do this or should I find a shop that specializes in transmissions ?

I would appreciate any input you guys have on this.

GM shops use the Trans Flow machine to to fluid exchanges. I did it about 20k miles ago, no problems. Next time will probably drop the pan and replace the filter and decide whether to also flush again.

136K now, it's been 19,200 miles now actually and 662 engine hours since!

My trans guy says:

A if the trans is acting up do not do a flush

B the flush cleans the filter so no need to

C flush is about the only way to get all fluid out

D if trans issue do filter and fluid in pan.

As Chris did I had my 07 Denali done at 110000 k no issues

Do you have a drain plug in your trans pan? I have a 2003 Denali 150 K miles with the larger trans so what I did was, drop the pan and change the filter and fluid. If you have the plug i would do a drain and refill after a week. That will get most of t he fluid swapped.

PERSONALLY I would not do a flush on a high milage trans.
