Transmission fluid change

I just got a '05 tahoe this morning. The truck has little over 200k on it. Shifts like butter. But the fluid is brownish. I want to drop the pan and change the filter but, can't do it because my leg is in a cast. And my ol' lady needs this thing ready for the road asap. Wanted to see what you guys think about me using a hand pump to get the old fluid out and put fresh fluid in.

TBH That's the preferred method if you just want to change the fluid. Don't do the trans cooler line stuff you may have seen posted. It's just... Begging for trouble


Stock filters are rock catchers. They don't really get dirty nor benefit from changing. They're just a glorified screen. Real benefit of dropping the pan is to clean the ferrous debris out.


Long straw down the dipstick, suck, fill. Need 3.5qts or so each time you do it

Doesn’t the ferrous debris get attached to the magnet anyway? I’d prefer the tube method a few times with a few hundred miles between.

Realistically all you need to do is start the car and shift it through the gears a couple times. Torque converter always has fluid going through it, just actuate the valves in the body

What kind of straw are you using to insert into fill tube? And pump?
