So the Tahoe has been sitting in the yard for a few months due to bad transmission and the 02 sensors. I will have some cash flowing in from taxes soon and believe I will have the money to bring it back to life. I was just wondering how much I'm looking at for a junkyard trans and how hard is the install on it. ( have done transmission swaps before but only on late 70s chevys) also do i need a specific transmission only from a 96 full size or will any 4l60E fit and work without throwing a code?

Also any reason the cat o2 sensors would kick a code if the cats are new ( like 4 years old) other then the actual o2 sensors being faulty? Truck does need a tune up including cap and rotor and wires.

I have the same question, im looking at buying a 97 Z71 ext cab that has a bad transmission and was wondering if it would be better to drop in a new tranny or have the bad one rebuilt. And if i was to replace it with one from a donor vehicle does it have to be from a 4x4 or will and 4L60e work?

here is a link to the truck im looking to buy any advice or info about doing this would be greatly appreciated!

You need a trans from a 4x4 because the extension housing (where the transfercase attaches) and the output shaft are different than one for a 2wd.

OK now that i have that straight is it better to rebuild the one in the truck or get a replacement one? Im selling my truck for 5000 so ill have 1500 to fix it and do exhaust and intake and the transmission, what would be the best bang for my buck?

Thanks for your help so far!

if it is original it will improve with a transgo kit during rebuild and you can ask for stronger friction material as well. A "built" replacement will definitely go above $1500.

Im not planning to do anything crazy to the truck just exhaust and and intake so i just need the stock tranny to be normal and i dont really want to spend the whole 1500 on just the tranny. Did you by chance take a look at the link? If so would it be best to rebuild the trans in the truck or just get a replacement one from a donor vehicle and have my friends who does transmission put it in?

then just a straight rebuild with a transgo kit to help improve on the defects and performance will work great. That tranny sounds like it broke it's sunshell so definitely got to thru a tear down. The kit should only less then $200 to price if not already included in price. The tranny shops I have worked with just do it as part of the rebuild. Getting a used on could be problematic later where as a rebuilt done properly with good maintenance will lass a very long time. My tahoe has 235k miles on the original 4l60e and it has really firm shifts still. One thing if that body damage extends into the cab body I would haggle a little over price.

Needs to be 4wd and there are 2 different style 4L60E's used in these. One style has a removable lower bellhousing and the other is the 360* bellhousing. Don't let anyone tell you only the LS engines got the 360 bellhousing, I've pulled parts from several with them, mostly 98 and 99 trucks

I've got one I just pulled out of mine that works fine (96 4wd), drive up here to Athens, TN and get it. $150 works perfect, I'm just switching to a manual trans.

Double check the aplication but I think a basic one for you is:

http://www.transgo.com/A1_4L60E-4L65E.html

There are some options too but they might be included with a master rebuild kit already.

This transgo kit is actually about $50 and ebay and tranny shops are a common source for them.

There are reprogramming kits too. Consult with a tranny shop for what is best for you.
