need a new sensor..very common

Sensor? Which one?

I had that same check engine code when I changed my motor and it meant exactly what he said...

They had to hook up a Tech II Computer from the dealer and the distributor needs to be pulled and set in line at one exact point that only the Tech II can tell.... Believe me I did this about 2 months ago.

The truck is drivable like that but you will notice lack of power and a lack of response from the gas pedal.

Hopefully you can find someone that knows a GM mechanic that will do it on the side, because I believe that they consider it a 2 hr job even though it only takes about 45 min.... I had a GM mechanic do mine on the side for $80 cash.... If not it would have been around $200....

Hopefully this helps....

It is NOT going to be the sensors, it will be that you didnt install the distributor correctly. You will need to get the current camshaft retard timing, which will probably be around -15to -18 degrees since thats around when the computer sets that code. You will have to bring it back to around 0 degrees plus or minus 2 degrees.

Yup, distributor isn't set right so timing is off. You will need a scan tool to set.

Even $80 is way too much, job only takes 20 minutes at the most. I would have done it for a 6pak if you were anywhere near me. And no, the TechII isn't the only computer that can read the cam retard.

What would be a good scan tool to have and i only plan to use it just a couple of time just when my truck needs it.

Cheapest one that reads cam retard would be the Auto Xray6000. It's around $250 so I don't if it is worth it just to use a couple of times.
