This just happened to me twice in a row. Started car, started proving and 30ish seconds later I lose engine power completely, no power steering, and check light comes on. I then put it in part and start it right back up and it seems to run fine, so what happened?

Also, not sure if this is related but my 97yukon sometimes after startup and put in drive will take off on its own without any pressure applied to the gas pedal, and rpm takes it up to about 2000. The way to stop it from doing that is to gently put your foot on the gas to about 2500 Ron and it will lower. Relation?

Probably a loose connection at the battery cutting power to everything.

The yukon may be suffering from a misbehaving IAC valve. As for your first question what vehicle are we talking about the same vehicle? You mention car, truck and an suv.

If the lights and electrical stays on it is going to be an engine issue.

If everything shut off then it is going to be a battery connection issue.

Sorry about how poorly written that post was. I wrote it on my phone after I'd been awake 24 hrs.

We are talking about my truck, not car like I wrote above- 97 yukon 2 dr.

It actually happened 3 times but the first time the RPMs dropped completely just for a second as I was making a left turn, and then it kept going like nothing happened- Like it was just a hiccup.

Then later in the same day I started it up, drove for a minute, and it just turned off completely, power steering gone, and I believe not only was the check engine light on, but all the lights that come on when you turn the key into the second position.

Also when this happening, my car had been having the issue where it accelerates by itsself when I go from park into drive without my foot on the gas pedal. (what causes this?)

Its been running fine for the past couple days now without that happening, and I have no check engine light.

I did a little research and a dirty IAC sounds like it could be what caused that. Is it easy to clean or replace?

Also I looked at my fuel filter and it looked like it could probably be replaced too (it looks old and dirty from the outside).

Ive only had this truck a few weeks so I'm still learning.

--OH and thanks Sunlitcomet. Your expertise on these trucks is so awesome!

Rpm drop offs in a 1997 unit can come from low oil as any air pockets sucked up can suddenly causing the the fuel pump switch in the oil switch to cut out for a split second. Would be nice if you get the fuel pressure checked downstream of the filter while this is actually goofing on you. You don't seem to have a battery or alternator problem. For all the other issues, remove the throttle body and remove the TPS sensor and IAC valve. Just need a torx bit for the sensors. T10 or T15 I think. Do not loose any seals or o-rings. Clean the bish down till it shines. Gently clean the IAC valve poppet. Put it all back together and start engine for 320 seconds. Off for 30 seconds. Then run the engine and check for proper idle control. We will go from there.
