Especially on cold start immediately after turning the key to start the front end engages/locks/slams into park? When I start the truck up in neutral its fine. Any ideas? Truck drives and shifts perfectly otherwise. 2003 EXT with 102k.

Actually I notice the same thing. Sometimes when parking, if I'm shifting from Drive to Reverse, I'll get the same 'clunk' if I come to a complete stop to shift, but if I'm still on a slight roll, no clunk.

Can't figure it out, though I think the tranny was rebuilt (prev owner) so I'm hoping it's from that and everything's on the up and up.

check your u joints. mine used to do this and after i had my u joints replaced i noticed it is no longer doing this.

to check u joints, just park your truck, get underneath and see if you can rotate your drive shaft. mine has a small amount of play but when i pulled it out, i found this

new u joints and all is good now. replaced with a/c delco greaseable joints if it matters.

and if you think you can do this on your own, think again. these have nyloc injection washers and its pretty critical to get them pressed in correctly.

the $7.50 per joint to install the new ones at a professional driveshaft shop was 100000000% worth it. i went ahead and had them rebalance it for $35 while they were at it.

but of course if there is no play, then you have problems elsewhere. just my experience.

Interesting, that happened to me 1nce before (though on a Denali 6.0L) but it was a clanging sound and didn't give any tranny play, so I never thought of that as the cause.

Will check that (VERY) soon! Thanks man!

Yeah I'll check that out but the thing is it happens when I start the truck. Not when i shift. Immediately after the truck turns over I hear and feel a big clunk in the front end? Like it re-engages into park but very hard? I park my truck in a level garage too.
