Ugh. Tires and Dealership Woes

Hey Guys.

Here we go. So I was at the Dealership about 4 weeks ago for oil / rotate and they did warranty work. Axle leak and replacing endlinks.

Fast forward 2 weeks later and I notice that my front tire pressure is low. Slow leak. I filled it up 2-3 times in the passed 2 weeks. On Tuesday 7/12 I hear it leaking, flat within minutes. Found the hole and noticed the inside of the tire is all chewed up and warn. Same with the other side. However rears are fine.

Call the dealership and they told me to bring it in. But they said it would be highly unlikely that it would be covered.

I think perhaps the forgot to check the alignment during the last service as I believe it’s routine to check if/when working on anything suspension related. Alignment must have been off after the service and that is why im seeing the uneven wear(only in the front). Driven roughly 750 miles since service.

I also thought it was pretty weird that the last time I was in 4 weeks ago they tell me that I’m gonna need tires pretty soon since my tread is low. My first set lasted almost 50k miles. This set is at 28,000 miles (roughly 2 years old).

Anyone have experience with this and am I SOL ?

You need an alignment. You were probably out of spec when you installed those tires 28,000 miles ago.

No shop will ever check alignment past a possible visual inspection on their 900 point pencil whipped inspection sheet. They didn’t do anything wrong, you need an alignment and 2 new tires (put new tires on back axle and 28k miles tires on the front axle).

No. That’s not it. I had my alignment done when I installed the new tires at 50k and I also had an alignment done when they replaced the shocks at 66k

My reasoning for the theory is that my front tires (now rear tires) were/are fine before the last service. No uneven wear on them. The only issue is on the now front pair of tires that had to of happen right after service during the additional 750 miles driven post tire rotation.

So a “wheel alignment check” line item on an invoice is a visual check ?

Why would I have uneven wear on one pair over the last 28,000 miles with 4 tire rotations and 2 wheel alignments done and not the other pair ?

If you’ve had those recent alignments than that changes things.

If they did any work during your most recent visit that involved messing with a front suspension component (sway bar links excluded) than the vehicle would have needed a proper alignment.

If it is specifically itemized on your paperwork as being performed and you did not receive a print out than I would question first if it was actually done and secondly if it was done was it done properly.

750 miles causing that much tire wear means something is definitely not right. Do you have any pictures?

Can you install just 2 tires on a AWD vehicle?

Sure I can post pics a little later. Here’s a list of items done at the service 750 miles ago.

- tire rotation / oil
- replace L/F sway bar link
- wheel alignment check
- R/F axle seal leaking, replace inner shaft seal
- stabilizer shaft link replacement

Can you install just 2 tires on a AWD vehicle?

2015+ No longer AWD but 4x4 auto like the rest of the lineup.

Good tire shops can shave down the new tires to match the others to keep the same rolling diameter.

How about your front hubs? My NNBS has bad inner tire wear and the hubs are shot. Needs 2 new hubs and 2 new front tires. Rears look fine. Was just aligned again this week when the shop put the drop on it. Shop said your hubs are shot, alignment won't be perfect, but safe to drive as I told them hubs were getting done and aligned again right away.

Agree with all that is said about an alignment check with a print out for any suspension/steering work. No assumptions and you can bet that is not done on a check at the dealer. It is just a sight/wear inspection.
