unreadable ecm

So I have a check engine light on in my wife's 04 yukon. She took it in to have the code checked and was told that they couldn't communicate with the ecm because it probably had a loose wire. Anybody know how to troubleshoot this. I'm having trouble tracing out the wires from the "port" under the dashboard to the ecm.
