im having the heads redone on my dads 1999 tahoe with a 5.7 cause of a bent valve and i had a question about adjusting the valves when i put it back together. the truck has close to 200,000 miles on it so were replacing the lifters and push rods so i was wondering with the new lifters not having and oil built up in them what is the best way to adjust the valves?

unknown at this time.
  1. Remove rocker arm cover.
  2. Crank engine until the mark on the vibration damper aligns with the "0 mark on the timing tab and the engine is in the number one firing position. This may be determined by placing fingers on valves of number one cylinder as the mark on the damper comes near the " 0 mark on the timing tab. If the rocker arms are not moving, the engine is in the number one firing position. If the rocker arms move as the marks comes up to the timing tab, the engine is in the number six firing position and should be turned over one more time to reach the number one firing position.
  3. With the engine in this position, exhaust valves 1, 3, 4 and 8 and intake valves 1, 2, 5 and 7 can be adjusted. Even numbered cylinders are in the right bank, odd numbered cylinders are in the left bank when viewed from the rear of the engine.
  4. Back off the adjusting nut until lash is felt at the pushrod, then turn in the adjusting nut until all lash is removed. This can be determined by rotating the pushrod while turning the adjusting nut. When play has been removed, turn the adjusting nut in one full additional turn.
  5. Crank engine one complete revolution until the timing tab " 0 mark and vibration damper mark are aligned. This is the number six firing position.
  6. With the engine in this position, exhaust valves 2, 5, 6 and 7 and intake valves 3, 4, 6 and 8 can be adjusted.
  7. With valves properly adjusted, install rocker arm cover.

That's the link I use ... pretty much what he said but .... you don't want to keep tightening till all rotational movement is gone (#4 above), you only want to tighten them until the up and down movement is gone. I hope that's what was meant and it was just poorly worded. I adjust 1/2 a turn after that point ... to each his own though really.

Always soak lifters and put a dab of assembly lube (you did buy a bottle of assembly lube, right??) on the roller, the cup where the rocker arm sits on the push rod and where the rocker arm meets the valve tip, whether it be roller or not. I don't put any on the cup where the lifter meets the pushrod, there is a hole there that delivers oil up to the top end, you want that oil flowing ASAP you don't want to wait for assembly lube to make it's way thru the pushrod. Soaking the lifters will ensure that the lifter has oil in it and won't have to pump up before you can properly adjust.

I would submerse each lifter in oil and pump it up with a pushrod before install. I'm never adjusting valves again unless the engine is running and oil is actually flowing after my last time I thought they were pumped full of oil, but they weren't . I do 3/4 turn from zero lash right when it stops clacking.
