So to start I was driving down the road and the whole truck died completely and coasted to the shoulder. I could get the motor to turn but never fire. I checked for fuel and it was getting fuel so i changed the ignition coil and distributor cap and rotor because the cap was busted but noticed there was plastic chunks under the rotor in the distributor. After a while of trying to start the starter busted to pieces and started grinding so i replaced the starter. now when i try to turn it over with the new starter it will turn some but then push the starter out of place so i have to loosen it and straighten it then tighten it back and then it will turn some more without fire but will push the starter out of place a little and start grinding on the fly wheel after the motor turns some. also when it turns it will back fire and blow smoke out of the intake and smoke from the distributor. I have spent so much time on this truck and we cant figure this issue out but its really bothering me. any help would be great.

I had an issue with our 98 that occasionally it wouldn't start. It would leave my wife stranded but I could go a day later to tow the car home and it would start. Happened several times. After replacing the fuel pump relay, a guy at the parts counter said that if I couldn't hear the fuel pump kick on when you turned on the ignition, that the fuel pump could be going out. A friend and I put a new pump on it and it's run fine for several years now.

Wish that I could help with your problem but it sounds far worse than mine was. Are the threads for the starter bolts stripped out? That starter shouldn't be moving around.

I'm not sure it doesn't seem stripped I can get the starter real tight but it seems to shift over some how, and I wish mine was just fuel pump but I checked at the fuel line going in to the motor and it's getting fuel and had a good amount of pressure, sometimes it tries to fire but backfires and shuts off.
