Voltage gauge all over the place

About two weeks ago while driving, the engine light flashed about 4 times and went away. Hasn't come on since but now I noticed the volt gauge seems to hover around 12 volts. Sometimes it sits in the middle at 14 and sometimes it shows around 16. This happens just about every day. Usually it sits on the 12 part of the gauge
I haven't had a chance to take it in yet. It runs fine so I'm guessing its minor. Anyone have this happen?

Check connections at Battery, Ground, and Alternator.

If connections are good then you likely have the start of an alternator failing. Need to see what the actual alternator output is but if problem is intermittent then may test good at that time and still fail later. I would also see what codes may have been set by the CEL.
