Hello All,

I am a long time lurker and post occasionally (very occasionally), but can't thank this forum enough for all the great information and knowledgeable members this place has.

Anyways, I have a 2007 Tahoe and about 8 months ago I upgraded from 24" Giovanna wheels to 26" KMC Slides. The 24" rims were great with the OEM brake rotors and pads and I never had any brake squeaking or squealing. I thought to myself, if I'm getting new rims I might as well get new brakes. I did not have extra cash lying around to spend on a big brake kit so I thought I would go the economic route and get some R1 slotted rotors and match them with some Posi Quiet pads. This set up was recommended to me by the people at R1 so I obliged. When I had the rotors and pads first installed by the first mechanic I do not think he washed off the protected oily finish R1 puts on their rotors. I was getting brake squeal after a month and got my pads changed one month later.

Well for the last 8 months I have continued to have trouble with this set up. A high pitched, lengthy brake squeal accompanies the Tahoe from any speed (60, 45, 30) all the way down until the vehicle comes to a stop. At that point it lets out one little last crackle of a noise. This happens every day. Approximately 5 minutes after I start driving and never goes away. I figure it cannot be the coating left on by the first mechanic because it surely would have burned off with the first set of pads and any contamination would be on the last set of pads.

The brake squeal has finally become so unbearable that I am contemplating selling the vehicle. I am on my second set of Posi Quiet pads and have seen over 10 mechanics and they say everything looks okay. Rotors aren't warped. Calipers look fine. Pads are still thick. I cannot solve the problem. My question is, is anyone else running 26" rims on aftermarket 13" rotors and not getting brake squeal? Would resurfacing the rotors and then throwing on some Akembo or other name brand pads do anything? I remember another member on here having 26" Slides with a 14" or 15" big brake kit and complaining about the same thing? Could it be the slides themselves? Or the slots on the rotors? Would an entirely new rotor set up be the answer? I just do not want to trash the R1's and put a new set up on the Tahoe and be in the same predicament.

Background: 2007 Tahoe. 26" Slides with 2/3 lowering kit. Brakes squealing bad. The solution is not lubricating the caliper pins and or using some form of brake quiet adhesive because both were done on both installations. Squeal comes from all 4 tires.

Sorry for the long read.
Thanks Guys!

First thing I'd do is try stock or different rotors and pads. I'm running 24's on factory brake stuff and haven't had any issues.

You need to bed the brakes in properly. Contact the rotor company to find out their recommended bed-in procedure. Before getting new pads, try a very fine grit sand paper to the rotors and pads (I bet they are glazed). The purpose is to expose new material for the bed-in procedure (not taking that much off). I would have a mechanic that is experienced do this. Also contact the manufacturer regarding this procedure. No guarantees and try at your own risk.

After that bed-in the brakes. I recall EBC recommended a few hard stops from 60 with a cool down between (not sure the exact procedure so contact the manufacturer for yours). It is important to let the rotors cool down slowly before each stopping event. Once that is done, it might squeak a little bit for the first 100 miles, but should go away after that.

Hope this helps.
