They are both Vortec motors. The 5.3 in a truck is a LM7 and a 5.3 in a car is a LS4 but I'm not a 100% sure.

The 350 has a history of it's own that is a generation old...if all you're looking for is occasional passing power...Nox.

If you go the newer 5.3 you might as well step up to a 6.0 about the same cost but more room for ponies. As for the 350 vortec the original in your hoe only has a two bolt main it can be weaker in performance apps. I went a later model 5.7 with four bolt main one piece rear seal. I was lucky enough to find a short block zz4 from gm went with all the goodies and have plenty of power!

The 350 is pretty much limited to 300HP stock, it's a torquey little bastard though! Unless you start digging into the engine itself and swapping for performance parts. I'm not sure if this is rediculous or not because I've never dynoed it before but if stock the 350 vortec has like 330 ft·lbf then I'd say I'm at nearly 400 with the $1000 of performance parts + running a 93 octane BB tune. Thats pretty good $ to TQ, and you can feel it for sure!

I don't know If I say opinion or fact, but, the concensus was, under 600 HP would be fine for a two bolt block. Hell I ran a 355 2 bolt 11.1 comp with AFRs comp 630 roller in an 80 malibu with 456s turbo 350 and ran 11.70s all day. When I went to a 406 the 400 block was two bolt, ran just under 10.99s then started having problems with the caps walking and had to go to splayed 4 bolts which cured the issue.

The Vortec 350s come with pretty stout bottom ends I would not be affraid of them to make 300-400 HP.

Hell this is an awsome price to me

Wow, they have some great prices.

Just curious, does anyone make a forged short or long block?

well since he stated a possibilty of boosting his motor general concensus would say go a four bolt for strength and longevity on the motor. If you are going to spend the money do it right the cost of the better block will be offset by reliability and will only help you down the road. Horsepower is addictive and eventually you want more so prep for that. In the end it's your ride and a heavy one at that not a 3300 lb Malibu. If you want speed in that truck step up look at JKMotorsports and TwinTT both wicked fast and stout built motors both diffrent varations on a GM V8. What ever you choose good luck and let us know what else ya need!
