This is an easy way to figure out what size the tires you have really are, or what you are looking at buying.

For example: lets say a 265 / 75 / 16

265 is the cross sectional width in millimeters - divide by 25.4, this will give you the tire width in inches - 265/25.4= 10.43"

75 is the percentage of the width that the sidewall height is - 265x.75(75%)= 198.75mm - divide by 25.4 = 7.82 this is the height of the sidewall in inches

take that 7.82, and double it = 15.64 - you have a sidewall on the top AND bottom of the tire, right?

add the 15.64 to the rim size (16") - 31.64" is the approximate size of a 265/75/16 tire mounted on a 16" rim

Now, for a larger size.... say a 345/60/20

345/25.4= 13.58" - width of tire
345x.60(60%)=207mm, divided by 25.4= 8.15"
8.15x2= 16.30, add rim size of 20", overall tire height is 36.3"

And you can do the reverse.
Say you want a 33" tire, with a 20" rim.

33" - 20"= 13" total sidewall height, /2 = single sidewall height of 6.5"
6.5 x 25.4 = 165.1mm
if you want a 50 series tire, divide the 165.1 by .5 = 330.2

since 330 isn't a standard size, you'd go up to a 335/50/20, which would be just over 33", or use a 325/50/20, just under 33"

Comprende???

This is a really good how to for guys who want to DIY. Good stuff.

But for the lazy man...Click HERE.

Thanks for the Buzzkill...... LOL.

I learned how to figure out the tire sizes years ago, before ANY of us had computers. A simple calculator was all that was needed.
I used to go looking for tires, and asked guys at the tire shops "does this size compare to this" or "how much difference in width are these two sizes?"

Most would say " a 205/50 will be wider than a 215/75, the lower the second number, the wider the tire"....
f'ing jackwagons.....
