What gas brand is the best for fill ups does it have it have to be tier 1 rated

What's a "tier"??? How would I know what "tier" any gas station IS?!?!? Hard to find "name-brand" gas stations anymore!!!
FYI: Have a 2005 XL and the Dealer suggested to start using mid-grade for the sake of the fuel system. Luv the old body style (glass & steel)/hate the hearse like 2006+ (plastic).

I take offense to your 2006+ comment as my 2006 is exactly the same as your 2005 except one year newer. Lol. I have seen marked benefits in milage and performance running 89 over 87.

Chevron and then Mobil will give you the best performance and gas mileage. Jorge, download the GasBuddy app on your phone and then you can look around and see who has the best prices.

I make it a habit to run high octane top tier fuel in my truck when running gasoline and around where I live, Mobil is the most convenient and delivers similar performance to Chevron.

But since last fall the motor has been on a steady diet of Ethanol and loving every gallon of it and so is my wallet! Running E30 costs me thirteen cents a mile right now.

Agree on Mobil. I will use BP if I need to. Since you got me into poking around with fuel, I have found (as you stated before) that I can count on shell to drop me by 1-2 mpg. I am anxious for spring /summer to run 85 again. Also think I will look for 30 to try.

Edit : have not run ethanol since the BBP tune. Will load the 91+ file for it.

Mobil has their people out in the field checking out their gas stations to make sure everything is working properly. I always see the station employees checking their tanks. Rest rooms are always spotless.

I have a had friends by tank fulls of dirt from other stations. RaceTrac is one of them. All my vehicles ran horribly on Chevron. I know some people love Chevron but I am not one of them. Shell burns like water in my Tahoe. I see the gauge go down quickly while I an driving using Shell. I had to use Shell a couple of times during a Hurricane as I had no choice. Shell rules the Florida Turnpike unfortunately.

Sunoco rules the I-95 corridor in Maryland and the New Jersey Turnpike. I always stop at the Maryland House on I-95 when I pass thru and tank up with Sunoco. No issues with their Sunoco 87. In fact I have a half of tank left by the time I get to NYC from the Maryland House.

I see zero difference in my Tahoe using anything higher then 87 octane. I used 89 and 93 and did not see any better performance or better MPG's. With that said I used 87 Mobil in all my Cadillacs,Caprices,Impalas and all my other V8 engines with zero issues.

IMHO you should only use a top tier fuel...Especially if you have Direct Injection.

Wow. I was really thinking something was wrong with my truck. Ill try chevron and see if it burns less than shell. Shell is all ive been using. Ive also been chasing alot of knock retard since last year and someone mentioned it could be because of shell, but i didnt believe it.

I tried a few different one brands but not sure what to stick too the manuel states it has to be tier 1 rated. My bj sells premium gas for $2.44 a gallon but bjs is not in tier 1 rated gas stations . And other gas station around me are at $3.00 a gallon that are tier rated gas station. What do you use brand noticed and give better milage. Anyone used bjs gas is it good

I did some work on this a few weeks ago when I got a used 2012 Yukon Daneli with the 6.2 engine and spent a lot of time reading the book and trying to get familiar with all the electronics. Below is the email I previously posted, which includes a link explaining about "top tier" gasoline, along with a list of all of them. I am still using the BP Premuim 93 octane which they say is the old Amoco "white gas" that I remember my grandfather using for everything including his lawn mowers and Cadillac back in the 1950's.

I did some work on these "top tier" gasolines, as that is what GM recommends in their owner's manual. Hard not to have to read it when you have a Denali with all the "stuff" that comes with it and you have no clue how to use it all and make it all work for you.

Locally I used "gas buddy" to find the least expensive Premium Gas in the area, and I found a newly opened BP station that has the Amoco 93 as their premium gas. Price was the lowest in the area at $2.49 per gallon. (opening special). But it can easily go over $3.00 per gallon for the "top tier" gas, so I guess I have to check and see who is at the lower end for a fill up.

GM makes a big deal about using this "top tier" premium gas, which in the old days we might have laughed at. But with this 6.2 it's probably best to "follow orders" from the manufacturer, when you hear of all the problems some members have been having. Same with the synthetic oil now, also not an option to not use it. Although I used Mobil 1 since new it on my 5.3 2003 Yukon and got 325,214 miles out of it!

Let's hope the carbon and the "new 8-6-4-" technology does not come back to cost us big time. I don't think there is any E 85 available in very many places in New Hampshire, and some of the lists on the internet are old and the places are gone. But I had the "flex fuel" option in my 2003 Yukon and maybe got one or two tanks full when in Pennsylvania or other states where it is more common.

Both AAA and Consumer reports did some research and checked out the "top tier gas" with the additives, and reported "top tier" gasoline had 19 times FEWER carbon deposits on injectors, intake valves, and in the combustion chamber when compared to regular gasoline, without the "top line" additives.

They also found a "clensing effect", reducing intake valve deposits by 45-72% when used over a 5,000 mile test. The variations appeared to be attributed to the specific detergents used by the various brands. With this 6.2 it is now absolutely essential to use this top tier gas, in my view.

BP/Amaco 93 - all day long. Started putting it in my Trans Am back in 04. Why? Cause if you look at all the higher octane blends from different manufacturers, the Amaco 93 is crystal clear like water. I like that extra refinement. And my TA doesnt have the "fumey" smell even without cats which was important in a vert.

Gas...... A few ways to shop...... Rule of thumb:

Regular. Always the freshest due to high use from station storage tanks. ( just a reality)

Premium. Not used as much from station so more chance of moisture contamination. Also, octane number is measured differently than used to be.

Grade.... The best grade is octane is what will "almost" cause a "ping". Best performance. So high grade may not be needed.

( Information from Drag race, road race tuners, and engine tuners / dyno testing )

One team I was on ( F-1 Tunnelboat ),, had an NHRA fuel tech advising... We used 105 octane race gas and added 10% regular unleaded gas for more horsepower.

So everyone has different needs.

I'd love to run leaded gas again! Haven't done so since the late 1980s when they phased it out at the filling stations, last one around me was a Gulf station. Used to run it in my '79 Buick, uncle had modified the filler neck to take the larger nozzles.

LOL True 2005 = 2006. Wasn't there something unique about that 2005/2006 change? I haven't really noticed any change. still getting the same 20mpg highway

Most of the changes happened in 2003. The 2005-6 got electric fans and the new red z71 logos. The 2006 got the new frameless rear glass and the virtual flex fuel sensor.
