What is a 5.3L worth if it’s bad???

Got a 2007 Tahoe 5.3 that started this tapping/rattle noise. It started all of a sudden. It runs fine and it’s not missing and it hasn’t lost any power. I took the belt off because it sounded like a bad pulley but the noise continued with the belt removed. Not sure what it is. Motor has 260k on it and it just may be worn out. What do you guys think?

Even though the lifters were replaced 120K miles ago, the lifter(s) could be failing again. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it were an AFM lifter(s). In addition to the oil changes, did the dealer also perform the lifter and oil pump change? Did they replace them with the updated lifters? What about the VLOM?

It's not uncommon for an AFM lifter to get stuck in the collapsed position. This would cause a dead cylinder, though. The lifter could even have rotated in the bore. It'll still function, but it's roller and that cam lobe will get chewed up. If it is a lifter, it'll likely get worse. There's a chance it's not a lifter(s), though. A spun bearing often resembles a lifter tapping sound and it'll run just like always for a little while. Notice any change in the oil pressure? Do you have a mechanic's stethoscope?

To answer the title question- It's worth anywhere from scrap value to it's value as a core to whatever someone may value it as factoring in the documented history. 5.3s are a dime a dozen and one with 260K miles and possibly serious issues won't be very desirable.

Yes oil pump was changed 9 months after the lifters were done. Not sure on if they used the updated lifters or not. I did have a guy offer me $500 for the motor and transmission but I think that’s to low.

best bet would be parting it out, intake/TB would be ~$200, Heads ~$300, Shortblock ~$300 (assuming all parts are good), trying to sell the motor with bad lifters will get a lot of lowball offers...if not interested in parting out the "bad" 5.3 is prob worth $250-$300 by itself

Yeah I believe parting out the motor would bring more money. Should I have it pulled first? My plan is to upgrade to the 6.2? Should I keep some of the parts or just sell them all and buy a motor with everything already on it?

I saw your CL ad yesterday morning. I had a service call in Long Beach so I was browsing for parts. I was waiting for someone to call me out on mentioning a bunch of info that you didn't even have in your post here. lol

IMO, I don't think the $500 offer is too low if the trans has 260K on it. You may get more and it certainly doesn't hurt to try!

I was wondering how you knew all that info...lol. I’m in Gulfport. But the trans only has about 100k on it since it was replaced by the dealer. I have to look at the paperwork. I guess the only upside to that price of 500 is I don’t have to directly pay anybody to pull it out. Should I dismantle the motor and sell the individual parts separately??

See what motors you find first. Some come as complete pull-outs with the accessories. If not, just keep your current ones to swap over. You'll have all the bolts, too.

I'd wait as long as possible before pulling it since there may be some people interested in the engine or whole drivetrain and being able to see and hear it run first will make a huge difference. If the timing doesn't work out and you need to pull it before it sells, you could always make a video. I once made a video to show a Jeep engine I was selling. Started out in the living room showing a current news broadcast on TV to verify the time and date, walked out to the Jeep and placed my hand on the exhaust manifold to show it was a cold start, then had my neighbor start it while I held the camera next to the engine but aimed at the exhaust pipe so they could hear it at a cold start and see if there was any smoke.

Ah. That changes things. Verifiable mileage on a trans is good and it alone should be worth more than $500.
