Take it off and see....

looks like the return air for the rear HVAC. Get a pic from all way at the bottom as low as you can go and tilting the camera up and you will probably see a filter media just behind the slots......

I don't think it comes off as the outline does not go thru the plastic.It would be nice if it did so one could clean the filter every so often.
