On a 20" inch wheel with either 275/55 or 285/50 tires, I am wondering what size tire needs to go on the 17" inch spare rim under the truck?

In order to keep the overall heights in case a spare needs to be mounted, I assume one has to make sure to keep the overall tire diameter as close as possible.

Based on this site: http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoTireMath.dos I figure that with either tire one would need a 245/75 R17 spare tire, did I get this right?

Thanks in advance.

I would go with a 255/75R17 if you can find one. That one seems to be between the 275/55R20 and the 285/50R20. The 245/75R17 is a tad smaller than the 275/55R20 and waay smaller than the 285/50R20.

Unless you're running awd/4wd, a spare can be slightly smaller or bigger than your setup and it will be fine over short distances, as I understand it.

Keep in mind that if you get 22s you're going to probably have to swap to a stronger hoist ... at leas that's the way it is on my truck. That's so you can hoist the 22" after you've mounted the spare on the wheel.

Of course you could just chuck the flat tire wheel in the trunk and not replace the hoist. :)

Thanks! Bet you guys will be all happy once I have my 20's installed and will no longer ask silly questions. ;)
