About time for my first oil change on my 2003 with 49,000 miles on it. The previous owner used oil from O'reilly auto but I'd like to use something different. I've always used Valvoline NON-synthetic in all my other vehicles with no issues. Is there a favorite/specific oil that the 5.3l V8's like?

Mobil 1. Been using it since it was graphite. These days I don't think there's too much difference between synthetics though. I j like to brand and the gray jugs of it look nice I'm the garage.
With miles that low though why not go with Amsoil or Royal Purple? Either way it's high quality. The one major benefit you get from using synthetic is that you can stretch out your oil change intervals. With my two previous GM vehicles I used Mobil 1 and changed every 10-12k. Never had one problem with the motors. Took my S10 Blazer to 180k and my Envoy to 111k. I also use it in my 02 Rav4 that I had since new. It's pushing 130k right now and no problems. However, as always...your mileage may vary.

ive actually a whole 1 MPG increase just by using royal purple alone
i just bought a 01 suburban and with what ever oil was in it before i drove through 2 tanks of gas completely and got like 14.26 and 14.38 mpg and then i had the oil changed with royal
and the last to tanks i drove i got 15.1 and 15.34 mpg and it was all in town and some freeway driving also my engine is much quieter with royal when it starts now with old stuff it was very noisy when you first started it in the morning

Nice! I've been thinking about the Royal Purple. My buddy has a Yukon with it and has 278k on the clock.

I use 5W30 Mobil 1 Full Synthetic, started at 46K, switched to the High Mileage One after about 75K, now at 103K. I do change it every 4K, wife does a lot of short trips. Runs excellent. Averages 15.3 mixed around Town Driving and about 18.5 Highway.
