Searched and didn't find a thread that answered my question so I thought I'd ask.

I changed out the brake pads on "the *****" a few weeks ago and when I got the caliper back on the rotor I spun it to make sure everything was cool and I heard a very, very faint tinking sound. Hard to describe but it was about once per rev of the hub and barely audible.

Checked clearances and nothing on the rotor or caliper was hitting or moving. Thought it might be a warped rotor but after watching it spin I don't see any wobble and there isn't any vibration in the steering. I do hear a hear and feel a slight popping noise sometimes when I turn or hit a bump but I attribute that to the intermediate steering shaft problem that is so common in these trucks.

I put the wheel back on and checked for play and there was absolutely none so I don't think the hub is going out but I don't know for sure. It's exactly the same on both sides so maybe it's nothing. I know that these trucks are kinda bad about wearing out hubs. Does anyone have any idea what it might be?

Just had to replace my hub last night. Mine was making a loud scratching noise when rolling. When i pulled the wheel off you could hear the bearing roll tick. I bought new bearings but couldnt pull the hub apart (02 2wd). End up paying like 115 for a new hub. The new one made absolutly no sound compared to my old one. If you take the hub off and spin it and hear any noise then i would replace it. That is exactly what i did. It took me like 15 minutes to disassemble and like 10 to reassemble. simple job...

That's the thing that gets me though...it doesn't make any noise when the wheel is on or when driving.

Mine was making alot of noise when moving but hardly none with it jacked up and no wheels. I had no play grabbing the wheel while it was jacked up. A buddy of mine looked at it too and first thought it was good because of no free play but after hearing the sound from the outer bearing we agreed. Popping sound coming from the boots of the tie rod ends maybe?
