Which starter 5.3

So Im seeing an external long bolt thru case and internal to choose from.
Will I have to drop the starter to view which one it is? Im guessing the external case bolts is the updated version from what Im seeing on the internet.

One is bolted to the gear internally.
Other has external bolts.. It's easy to drop the starter so Im thinking I'll
do that after all.

Take a picture so we can see what you are talking about.
I only know of the old chevy big starter and these new small ones. my 95 Z-71 had the same starter as the LS motor in my Taho.
You have me curious now

Turns out they are interchangeable.. mine has external bolts & is a little smaller than the internal bolt made starter. I didn't want to order the wrong one, turns out either work.
