Will replacing factory speakers be enough?

This could spiral out of control, and I don't want you to waste money. Considering what limited knowledge we have about your listening preferences, start with the basics and build from there. Definitely get a new head unit and door speakers. If it sounds good to you, there is no need for an amp to the doors for now. A mono amp for the sub is the way to go. You need to factor in some costs for wiring, mounting, and labor if you're not doing it yourself. It's not that hard. This site has some great info. Good luck.

No problem... I didn't notice earlier that you have the 2 ohm vc's. You'd be better off to spend an extra $20 or so to step up to the ASPM-1500 and wire to 4 ohms. The 1300 is power hungry and you'd need to upgrade the electrical to run @ 1 ohm, which would defeat the purpose of buying an inexpensive amp. Good luck and post lots of pics.

Forgive my ignorance, but what are vc's? I'm familiar with how resistance affects voltage and current but in this context I'm a bit confused, would you mind briefly explaining what all of the different ohm stuff means in my case?

As far as listening preferences go, all I want to be able to do is enjoy a clean, good quality system in my car at normal listening volumes. The only reason I'm using the 12" sub is because its available to me for cheap(maybe free). I think I will just get a mono amp. I'm trying to avoid any other upgrades to my electrical system but if its absolutely necessary then I will.

As always, I appreciate all the help you guys have been giving me..you dudes are awesome haha.

Voice coils... they can be wired differently to set the ohm load on the amp. For example, you have two 2 ohm voice coils on that sub. You can either wire it for a 4 ohm or 1 ohm load on the amp. In order to run 1 ohm, you would need a 1 ohm stable amp and, depending on amp selection, you would need to upgrade the electrical system on your Tahoe. The best option would to find an amp that puts out sufficient power at 4 ohms as it would put a lot less stress on all of your components and ultimately cheaper.

Eh... Regardless of ohm load the amp is still putting out 1000 watts... So it still takes roughly the same amount of amps +/-20amps depending on efficiency. The only thing spending the extra money on a larger amp is going to do is give you better sq due to less distortion at 4ohms. The amp is still going to have nearly the same current draw on the electrical system to produce the same wattage.

I see you linked the new version of the 12" alpine type R, as well as the dual 2 ohm voice coil. Can you get the model number off the sub you have to verify that is the correct one please.

Also I do recommend going to a car audio shop like Car Toys or another local one to actually listen to these products. As well as play around with the radios to get a feel for them and whether you like them or not.

Are you planning on installing all of this yourself?

I think theres a change in plans. My roommate just informed me that he has two 10" subs and an amp to go with them and that I can just have them for free (I build computers and I'm letting him use one I built so he said I can just use his speakers). He's unsure of the model because he hasn't used them in a couple of years but once I find out exactly what they are I'll be sure to update you guys.

The good news is that the subs and amp can be installed later, since the very first thing I'm doing is buying and installing the head unit. I'm thinking I'll be able to install the head unit myself. Should I wait until I have the new front speakers and install both the HU and the speakers at the same time?

I'm planning on heading into an audio shop whenever I get the chance, I'm just so busy during the week with school and work.
