Well I did my first radio install with many more to come. Unlike most other radio operators and hams, I do my installs different. I do not drill holes into the dash or resort to using the junk vent mounts as those are junk. I use the Panavise mount that holds the radio firmly and does not require a bunch of damaging holes. I am going to be adding the laptop mount, a 220, HF and 700 mhz radio soon as well as my GPS unit. Need any advice, let me know and I will help if needed.

Looks Good! I am currently saving funds to purchase a YAESU FT-8800R, I am going to remove my slave cassette drive and build a custom bracket to hold the radio. I found a write up about using the on-star base and cabling to use to Tx/Rx and just have to switch out the antenna portion ( I have the old Analog setup) I will include lots of pics when I do the write up. I work EMS, SAR, ARES and a member of the California Disaster Health Care Response Team so I use Ham quite a bit for Emergency sense. I am really statrting to get into it as a hobby much more and looking to go General next weekend then Extra from there.

Again, looks good and look forwards to you build up.

Sounds good. I would discourage from using the Onstar antenna idea completely, in my honest opinion, this is not a good idea. Reason being is because of the change in ohms for your antenna impedance and the fact the radio will 99% sure have a bad SWR (Meaning reflected power back to the radio). I am not for the (on-glass antenna) thing, but that would be your best bet if you do not want to use magnetic mounts or drill holes. I am getting my safari rack in a few weeks and I am going to be making a special mounting plate for my 6 antennas to go onto. This way I get my ground and I won't have to drill any holes in my truck. Let me know if you need any help or advice, I will help as much as I can.

Take Care
