OK so I'm still trolling Craigslist and other sites "window shopping" for trucks (I say window shopping because I can't really seriously shop until I sell my 4runner and that won't be until next year.)

But I came across an ad for what purports to be a 2004 Yukon XL 1500 SLT. It had some interior pictures and I saw this:

Yukon%20control%20panel_zpsuihuwb6w.jpg

OK, up until now I had assumed that the 4wd controls on a Yukon XL would either be identical to the ones on a Suburban (if the XL had the 5.3 engine) with the stacked 2hi/4hi/4lo buttons and the round "Auto 4wd" button, or if the XL had the 6.0 it would be AWD all the time and there would be no control at all, just a blank panel here.

Is that not correct? What seems odd to me about this one is that there is no "Auto 4wd" button and that the top button (which would be the 2wd button if it was a Suburban or Tahoe) has the 'slippery road' thing which leads me to believe it may be the auto 4wd? So does that mean the 5.3 Yukon is always in "auto 4wd" mode with no straight "2wd" option?

Dumb question, maybe, but was there ever an AWD GMC truck like this with a low range T-case?

Thanks in advance. I'm learning!

Stabilitrac/Autotrac?

OK so a little time googling pictures brought up the likelihood that this is the t-case control of a vehicle with Autotrac or Stabilitrac (are the terms interchangeable?) a type of AWD or full time 4wd system.

So if I am guessing correctly, the Yukon in this picture is most likely equipped with a 5.3 rather than a 6.0, correct? Weren't all the 6.0's single-speed AWD transfer cases?

I'm also hearing that Stabilitrac/autotrac doesn't have a great reputation for reliability, so it's good to know. I'll steer clear of it when shopping.

EDIT: OK, so apparently autotrac is the "standard 4wd" system and Stabilitrak is the optional AWD system. I think I understand now!
