Yukon XL to Denali headlight swap 9006 HB4 to 9005 HB3 conversion
For those considering this I thought I would post my experience as I just did Yukon XL to Denali headlight swap (9006 HB4 to 9005 HB3 conversion)… instead of filing out the plastic in the 9005 light to fit in the 9006 sockets here's what I did:
My 05 SLT Yukon XL comes factory with 9006 headlight/harness for low beams.
2000-2006 OEM Denali headlights are 9005 HB3. (High beams for both SLT and Denali are 9005).
The oem Denali lights I picked up off the inter-web were missing a pigtail they normal would come with that converts the harness from 9006 plug to 9005 bulb socket.
So I had to decide what to do to get the harness to wed with the bulbs… instead of buying or making a harness adapter, I just spliced the factory light but sockets and soldered in hight-temp 9005 bulb sockets. The high-temp 9005 bulb sockets are usually available at your local auto parts store.
Fit wise, it was a direct swap and took less than 20 minutes from start to finish. As mentioned elsewhere the Denali lights do seem to bulge a bit but they look great. (Down the road will probably do HID projectors.) After installing just had to adjust using torx 15 to aim the lights up...
While the hood was up I did the 4-high mod with 3amp 50V barrel diode in the relays.
Hope this helps someone down the road.
NOTE ON PHOTOS: 1st photo is new 9005 socket before install. 2nd photo shows light throw comparison, 3rd photo shows look of regular headlight (passenger) and one Denali (driver) mid conversion.
