I have a 2000 tahoe nbs 4x4 and 6 months ago I did my rear brakes- pads, shoes, drum/rotor. Everything works fine except when I engage the e brake and pull the release, my e brake doesn't disengage until I put it in reverse and back up, then it makes a thump when it releases. When I pull the release the e brake pedal pops up normally so I think the cable is sticking somewhere. This usually occurs only when I'm parked on an incline. Anybody familiar with this problem or know how to fix it, thanks.:help:

6 month bump!
Also, I found out sometimes my e brake doesn't even engage when I press the e brake pedal down. I'll pull into a parking spot on a small incline, press the e brake, shift to neutral, and truck still rolls. E brake usually works when parked downhill, though.

So did the e-brake work before the brake job 6 months ago?

I'd be taking the rear wheels and rotors off again and checking it all out again, sounds like the somethings gummed up and dirty where it pushes the e-pads against the drum of the rotor, wouldn't hurt cleaning everything up in there and seeing if that solves your problem!!

I did the brake job because the rotors were wearing unevenly and were badly rusted and the e brake didn't work. In the process of taking it apart I found the shoes were worn down to metal and gouged the inside of drum. So, I installed new rotors, shoes, and pads. I'm thinking this problem happened before with the previous owner and they just kept on driving it til the shoes wore all the way down. I guess I'll just get off my ass and take it all apart, one of these days.

So, I was putting my winter wheels on and decided I would check out my e brake problem and I think I found out why the brake was sticking. The drivers side e brake lever that engages the brake was getting wedged in between the upper link bracket. I took my dremmel and shaved the part that was sticking and It seems to have fix my problem-
Before. You can see where it was getting wedged

After. It doesn't touch the bracket anymore.
