this is a very common pattern: telling people that feature X is for their "safety", when in reality it is done to surveil and control them.

other related examples: Find My feature on the iphone sends continuous gps coordinate data to apple, intel "anti theft" allows large organizations to control machines on remote, intel management engine allows for "people" to control machines on remote, search engines and social media routinely blacklist content for "safety", etc.

whether most people realize it or not, onstar - and every other default-enabled car monitoring system - is there to mine their location data and sell that data to interested 3rd parties. unless you fully disable the cellular transceiver used by such systems, you cannot even use your own vehicle without it being tracked, even if you leave your phone/devices at home.
you have to realize also at least for the gmt900's being that 3g is defunct these units at best could only receive a satellite signal, there is no transmission = untraceable.
and the k2's and T2's could be traced provided there was a 4g signal, there is no satelitte "uplink" on any publicly sold GM ehicles unless you somehow added it 3rd party, these only receive. without 4g they can't sit there on there on computer screen and watch you move around that requires a "signal transmission"
the word "onstar" leads many to believe you have some kind of space based communication, you do not.
if you crash in the mountains with no cellular service and press the blue button ain't no one coming to rescue you, your done.

So if the vehicle is untraceable, how does onstar provide location information to the popo in the event your ride is no longer in your possession and the thugs are out for a ride?

via 4g cell towers on the k2's and T2's. gmt900 and previous are untraceable unless you installed a 3rd party product such as lojack
they have a few tricks up there sleeve such as license plate readers but that only gives a general vicinity as you passed the camera
or if say someone was kidnapped and they called 911, then they could trace the phone within a couple 100ft or so, provided it was still with the vehicle.

It would depend on what year. GM offered LTE in later 900’s.

any cellular ONStar can be easily disabled. Short the antenna to ground (stuff the connector with aluminum foil. If the cellular device is based on a smaller portable with an internal antenna wrap it in foil and leave it installed and powered on. Put's the device out of the coverage area, ask me how I know. ;)

No suv's anyone has ever heard of, there was a rumor about maybe some canadian models having it but highly doubtful otherwise some of us would have modded it in.
they changed the silverado's in 2014 to the mylink and gds2 systems, suv's changed in 2015.
have you ever heard of a gmt900 with mylink and built in 4g hotspot? the radio would be completely different
per GM:
Chevrolet today announced at the Consumer Electronics Show that the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette, Impala, Malibu, and Volt would be the first General Motors’ vehicles to come optionally equipped with OnStar 4G LTE. They will be followed by the Equinox, Silverado, Silverado HD, Spark and Spark EV. In the Canadian market, OnStar with 4G LTE will be introduced on the Chevrolet Trax as well. The majority of the 2015 Chevrolet lineup in the U.S and Canada will have a 4G LTE connection built-in at vehicle launch. More models will be announced later this year.

Then the new style mylink radio went in the 2014 silverado/sierra 1500's
and in 2015 it went in most if not all remaining, looks like the vans and 2500/3500's could have had either the new or old style
at this point the radio became modular and they just upgraded the modules for ios 4-5-6 etc, adding in cd. dvd, bluray, android auto/car play, etc
some of the pickups came with a lower end 4" screen
