Actual Payloads on 23 and 24 Tahoe with Max TOW package

Im looking at getting my first family car which i'd also like to double as a towing vehicle. Been cramming kids in a hatchback for too long. My target travel trailer is a 20' and I have no concerns about the towing capacity, just payload.

Does anyone know what actual real world payload capacities are actually obtainable with the 2023 or 2024 tahoe? I've asked various dealers as well as support on the chevy site it self and nobody can give me an answer of what ranges to even expect for payload. Having a tough time finding sample payload stickers online as well.

I've seen a ~1,900# number quoted in various places for payload on the Tahoe, wondering if theres any chance of actually getting something close to that...

The only "required" option/addon is the Max Trailering Package. Im still debating with AWD vs 2WD so i'd shave off another ~100# there if i went AWD. If I could land close to 1,800# in its factory state, I would be quite happy. If I miss it, not the end of the world but want to know what I am getting into.

EDIT: I am also actually pretty indifferent to yukon vs tahoe. A car is a car to me and I just want something that can tow and haul my kids and their friends around. The yukon and tahoe both seem pretty similar in capabilities so I really wouldnt prefer one over the other. If I get a min of 8,000# towing capacity, uber close to 1,900# payload and min of 7 seats, my life is complete. I wish those suburban 2500s still existed... Thats technically over kill but i'd never have to worry.

Also a little worried that I wouldnt be able to get an order in for a 2024 Tahoe and the payload appears to be going down. 2023 looked slightly higher than 2024 and the 2024 higher than the 2025..

On GM’s website it shows the 5.3L in 2 wheel drive trim can haul 8400 lbs and 1834 lbs of payload. What may be more helpful is GVWR or Combined rating.

FWIW - I have a '22 Yukon XL 4WD - Duramax - 9 seat config - Max Tow Pkg. GVWR = 7700lbs - Curb Weight = 6117lbs - Payload = 1583lbs

We pull an '18 Keystone Passport 239ML - it puts us right at 12.1K GCWR (Yukon = 7350lbs - Trailer = 4750lbs) - That's with 2 adults and 5 kids.

I don't think you'll have a problem getting closer to 2K payload on the Tahoe platform. GM's website lists the curb weight at ~5580lbs and GVWR at 7500lbs. The actual curb weight will be different as they are all specific to their trim level and option configurations. As I'm sure you're aware, a more loaded config with Mag Ride, pano sun roof, 22" Rims, etc. will have a higher curb weight and hence less payload capacity.

I'd suggest going to a dealer and looking at some Tahoes. On the inside of the driver door will be a sticker and it will give you the actual payload capacity of that unit along with its curb weight, axle ratings and GCWR.

Thanks, some helpful replies. We were looking at towing something as big as the jayco micro 171BH which is 4,995# fully loaded. We dont really want to go bigger than a 20' trailer so theres a few options that should work out for us.

I've actually called and reached out to many dealers and its surprisingly hard to get this info. I went out to the lot the other day and saw some tahoes but couldnt find any locally with the max tow. The ones they did have were floating around upper 1700s for payload and that was with 20" wheels and misc bells and whistles. Dealers all looked at me like I am crazy when i told them im looking for the minimum feature set and 18" wheels. I've called a few dealers as well but nobody has a minimal LS with max tow in stock to get a concrete number.

It'd be awesome if i could hit that quoted 1834# payload number thats quoted online but I'm guessing by virtue of adding max tow, it shaves off some ~100 of pounds.. wouldnt be terrible, just trying to know what to expect. Want to max it out just to keep the most options available when time to update our trailer if we decide to do so later on. Good chance if we do upgrade beyond the 20' that means we are getting into truck territory anyway.

We tow a 30' trailer (26' box) using a 12k wdh. It's rock solid on the road. Had two trailer tire blowouts at 70 MPH and it was like nothing. Just pull over and swap the tire. Even had a handyman lose control of his pickup in the rain and shoot entirely across the freeway on his roof from the fast lane to the slow lane shoulder right in front of us. I plowed hard on the brakes and everything was poised and we just kept on trucking.

Lol, these idiots asterisked hard on (an extra space between gets around it).

Do you need 3 row seating? If not, have you considered a truck? It’s much easier to find max towing, 18” wheels, and minimum add on’s.

Hello! Not sure if you are dead set on new vehicles but I started a thread on here for the Suburban 3500 which are obviously newer than the 2500 so they have a few more creature comforts and have 4k+ payload. Technically, they only have 3k towing but that because it was GM’s lazy way out to certify with full payload.
There are a few LS ones for sale and 1 LT for sale on AutoTrader right now. Might be a good option as it will be more than capable to tow the trailer and haul the kiddos.

tl;dr - We went back and forth on truck vs suv but decided we really need the seating for non-tow days.

We already have 2 smaller fuel efficient cars and we really need a people mover now too. One of them is probably gonna go with this but theres already been cases where having 3 cars would be helpful while ones in the shop...

We are only a family of 5 but when we go out on local outings, zoo, softball, carnivals, etc and our kids want to take a friend, we are already out of space in the small car & suv. There was a point we were thinking about the front row bench in the tahoe as well but we convinced ourselves no (for now). Lots of people are only 1 kid out here so they always have room for our kids. Would like to help contribute when its our turn to occupy their kids

Cars are not cheap these days but I would gladly take a truck and an SUV if both parties were onboard ;)

A truck may be inevitable one day if we decide we want to upgrade to a more spacious travel trailer. I may just be forced into a custom order as well. I've reached out to many dealers on some used listings that looked like they had the max trailer pkg only to find they sold a few days before or are not listed correctly.. skeptical that they are not just bait listings ..
