Best to do the compressor and the shocks at the same time. Buy OEM shocks, the Arnott compressors are good. I'm running an Arnott compressor on my suv.
If you are using aftermarket shocks they may not be sending the correct signal to the BCM and that's why you are getting the code...
Has the steering box ever been changed out? Try adjusting it and if the play does not come out, you need to replace it. The only steering boxes I would buy would be oem, blue top or red top. Anything other than that is junk.
I donot think is the compressor or the shocks. It could be the steering position sensor, or the yawl rate sensor. When one of those two sensors go out the shocks get stiff. Those sensors send out a code. Get the codes and start there.
