I’m happy to hear you got 175k on the trans. Would be thrilled if I got that from mine.
I had unit replaced by dealer at 14k. 94k on truck now (80k on new trans). Had dealer change filter and fluid at 45k, so it’s time for another service.
I’m going to do a change in the next week on my...
I have purchased 2.
First was for our 2003 Montero. We never used it. I was worried about Mitsubishi issues, but the truck was a tank. It was awesome, but drank gas.
Second one is for my current 2015 Yukon XL Denali. The MRC repair alone paid for it. It would have been $2100 out of pocket...
Mine has paid for itself many times over.
2015 Yukon Denali
3/4 MRC struts
GPS antenna
Fuel pump
Many sensors
Fuel injector
Lumbar support leaked (air bladder)
Prob some more items I’m forgetting.
would not buy one for Toyota or Honda, but a high end GM truck, yes
Hi Wings-
Did you drop the pan or just suck out the old fluid and refill?
I had mine done- filter/pan drop at dealer 45k, but want to do it on my own next time. Wondering how you got pan past exhaust crossover:
remove manifold?
Strap/ jack exhaust down to clear?
Disconnect 2 rear solenoids...
Put 75w90 in both and call it a day. The key is it’s fresh with additives and clean.
I put Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90 in both boxes at 39k and will do again at 100k
No need to overthink this one.
yes, a good purchase. Mine has served me well on my ‘15.
Trans fluid changes (pan and filter) should be done 45k without question on these, especially 8 and 10 speeds.
That warranty has taken care of:
Fuel pump
Many sensors
Battery cable
Seat lumbar
Fuel injector
My MRC struts
GPS antenna
And...
Severe service (which most of us drive, unless you’re on highway at steady speed all the time) states 45k:
‘Change automatic transmission fluid, if equipped. If filter is serviceable, change filter. (Applies to: Severe)’
Change trans
Just change it at 5k and call it a day. Clean oil is critical, especially if there are possible brake booster issues. It’s lubed by engine oil:

Thanks, I asked because the 8L90 is different and have not heard of anyone doing the fluid exchange as was done with the previous models. Pretty sure the 8L90s cannot be changed that way.
Thanks for the quick reply. Just so I’m clear, you left the fill plug out (not the level check plug) , started the engine for a bit, then shut off engine and filled last quart in the already open fill hole?
After that, you buttoned up the fill hole and checked fluid level while trans was at...
nice work! When you filled the last quart after letting it run a bit- did you add the quart while it was running or did you button up the fill plug and shield, run it a bit , then remove shield and plug again?
I’m wondering if you can run it a bit with the plug out or will fluid spray out all...
Here were my plugs at 76k. They would be fine for the full 100k and probably more. I did it sooner since I had time and also wanted to avoid potentially having a harder time getting them out with higher mileage...
Auto mode will engage the transfer case. Mine makes a little noise too. I have read some on this- some hear noise others don’t. Unless it’s really loud, it sounds normal.
I changed my transfer case oil and both diffs’ oil at 39k.
I suggest you keep the fluids clean and not worry about it.
Glad to hear you made it to 200k, gives
Me hope with my 2015.
My ticking was in fact a lifter that did fail and a broken spring at about 77k miles.
Just take it in and have dealer listen to it - my dealer is great and have had really good customer service with them. So if you trust them...
Ohtexan,
You must be the .1%, that’s great news for you, seriously.
I also have done the severe service maintenance schedule, going beyond in fact in some cases, like drain and refill both diffs and transfer case with full syn fluids. The diffs and transfer case are about all that has not yet...
Mid year 2015 production got the 8L90 8 speed. So, 2015 models can have either.
I have the 2015 8 speed. It was replaced with an updated trans at 14k miles and is ok - not awesome, but ok.
I recommend spending the money for an extended bumper to bumper warranty. I’ve never been a fan of...
