That reminds me of another tip that someone told me years ago about the fuel system on these trucks. Try to always fill back up before getting below 1/4 tank. I can't remember the specifics on it but your reply seems to tie into that reasoning.
Honestly, if it's clean with no rust and has been taken care of...I'd get it. Yes the transmissions aren't great in these trucks and I'm sure you will be looking at some other random failures here and there but for the money this would be a no brainer for me. Besides the transmission some...
I had to replace one in another vehicle this spring and went with one of the Duracell AGM batteries from Batteries Plus Bulbs. I believe it was East Penn that supplies these so they should be good quality but time will tell if they are worth the premium price.
16 on a NBS is pretty decent. I usually get around 15-16 with my 01 5.3 Hoe and I try not to drive as aggressively as I do my DSMs. I also live in the mountains of NC so it can fluctuate quite a bit if I don't have some highway miles in there and have been pulling up mountains on small trips...
I made the switch on my Hoe when I got her with around 155k with no problems. I'm with drakon543 though, I'd recommend using a good quality synthetic like the Pennz Ultra Platinum or Amsoil. You can catch rebates on the Pennz from time to time and it's already reasonably priced at Wallyworld.
Define "roughly" for us. Reason asking, many people upgrade to a corvette servo in these transmissions to make them shift firmer in 1-2 & 2-3. The normal "smooth" shifting is actually the transmission slipping which can lead to premature wear and failures. The previous owner may have upgraded...
Here's a good thread with some more ideas. I've been meaning to do one myself so thanks for the reminder ;)

Welcome to the board and good choice on what is called the NBS (new body style). I too love them and looked for over a year for a nice clean one in my area, but I'm in NC so finding a nice one that old with no rust is a challenge. For me, finding one with no rust and had been well taken care...
My Hoe was the same way when I purchased her. The older gentlemen used it to smoke like a freight train on his way to the Casino lol. It takes time but you can get it cleaned up. First off clean everything good. You can use a mixture of TSP, clorox, and dawn to help remove odors. After...
While I've never had an issue using it or it messing with the plugs I'd lean towards before as well. Just added insurance and I can't see any additional benefit of doing it after vs. before.
Everyone has made great points! Yes, they do have a lot of cool new technology but another thing to consider if you haven't driven any of the other models is how the ride and vision compares to the old nbs. I'll be honest, we have a nnbs model at work and I would 10 times rather drive my nbs...
