Fuel trim, short and long. wierd values (OBD)

I'd look for an air leak at the exhaust manifold or donut in front of the primary oxygen sensors. You can suck air in through an exhaust leak at higher engine speeds, especially on longer downhill grades. How do the spark plugs look? That's another good indicator of whether you're actually...

Rear drums / Parking brake strut

Keep an eye on the wheel bearing and seal on that side. Sounds like they were subjected to a lot of heat.

    Headlight removal

The rod and nut both get rusty. The nut has a plastic cage in the headlight housing that tends to break free. You'll have to pull the grille to get it apart. I used anti seize on the threads when I put it back together

    Loud Clunking Noise Help

A bit pricey but it sounds like they went well above & beyond, sourcing another diff, breaking out the gas axe, etc. Any pics of the carnage? I just finished my first 10 bolt rebuild (for a 69 GM A body, sourced the donor from a 71-72 A body) and I spent $1120 on conversion/installation. I...

    Disabling the ABS module

You don't have a lunchbox locker in the rear, by chance, do you? The PO put a Powertrax in my rear end and it drove the ABS nuts. Took me FOREVER to figure that out...had the same symptoms you did. It made for some sporty driving.

    transfer case

I rebuilt the 246 transfer case on my '98 and was able to spin the output shaft by hand after I reassembled it. That snap ring is a PITA though. I ended up using 2 idential screwdrivers to spread and seat the snap ring. I have a Microsoft Word doc of the rebuild. If I could figure out where...

Rear drums / Parking brake strut

It certainly could. The notch is wider on one side to accomodate the e-brake lever on the primary (rear) shoe. The strut could keep the e-brake lever from retracting fully.

    Dying motor

The crowning achievement of the Viper happened the first time I took the family to the beach. After a full day of swimming went to get something out of the truck I found her idling in the parking lot. First I thought someone was trying to steal the truck then I realized she had idled long...

    Head or Lower Intake Gasket?

That's a pretty good price for a full rebuild. How far over did he bore it?

    Dying motor

Do you have an aftermarket alarm? My truck had a Viper that caused all kinds of weird problems until I removed it.

    Head or Lower Intake Gasket?

Did you get the pics from the rebuilder? Would be curious to see what the old crank looked like.

    Odd vibration at low speeds

My u-joints all checked out ok and the fronts were relatively new. It was only after I pulled the front d/s out to replace them that I found the problem. With the D/S on the ground one U joint was binding up in one direction.

    At a loss.

Service engine soon and Security are 2 different lights. Security is all about the Pass Key system. If the system thinks the truck is being stolen it will keep it from starting or cause it to stall right after starting. Worth ruling out in your case.

    Odd vibration at low speeds

I had a nasty resonance at 55mph that took forever to find. It was a bad u joint in the front d/s. The front d/s spins even when the 246 transfer case is in 2WD. It isn't transmitting any power but can still set up a vibration.

    Head or Lower Intake Gasket?

Wow. Incredible that it had all these engine issues and was still running decent until the end. Shop have any idea what the "boom" was?

    At a loss.

Does the "Security" light go out when you try to start it?

    quick disconnect for heater hose?

Either way you'll have to unscrew the fitting from the intake. I've had a lot of persistent leaks with the quick disconnects in the Suburban and other GM vehicles. Replacing it with a brass nipple for the heater hose is a good option. Take the old fitting to the parts store and match the...

    loud fuel pump

Yep, especially if it had been quiet up to this point. I'd recommend the Delphi pump as it comes with the upgraded harness and connector. The flat connector has to be spliced to the body but, per GM, the OE square connector has issues.

    Head or Lower Intake Gasket?

Yikes! Any idea what gave out? Prior to starting this odyssey had you been north of 3500-4000 RPM? I'd be curious to see what happened. You're having it rebuilt locally, right? Maybe you can ask the builder for a few pics of anything he finds.

    Head or Lower Intake Gasket?

The MT2500 is a great scan tool. Make sure you get all the personality keys with it. The FastTrack cartridges are a "nice to have" but the keys are, well, key.

    Head or Lower Intake Gasket?

There's a TSB for a P0300, espec when the engine is under load (towing, pulling a hill, etc.). The fix is to pull the heads and ream the valve guides per the TSB. For as often as it occurs on my '98 I said to heck with that. I'll see if I can find the TSB #.

    Head or Lower Intake Gasket?

If it throws the code you'll need a scan tool to sync the dizzy and CKP. Basically the Tech 1 or Tech 2 takes control of the engine and revs it up incrementally to about 4500 RPM. When done the ECM learns the error between the crank and cam position sensors and stores a series of offset values...
