I’ve got an ‘07 Tahoe with ~215k miles on it... currently sitting on the range on my land lease facing a slight uphill.
As I passed the 200 yd berm I decided I would put a target up - and slowed / braked to put in reverse, then attempted to put it into park to put up a target...

I can get the transmission to find any gear, much less park or reverse.

I tried braking and violently thrusting back and forth while attempting to get into any gear...no dice.

So any field tips would be appreciated!

Tempted to coast backwards down the decline to then try and get front end oriented where it’s facing down the slope to then try and find drive...

Not sure if this would screw things any worse??

Sounds like the shift cable may have come unhooked. Do you still feel the detents that separate the gears when you move the shifter?

Correct diagnosis! Thank you for your post. The driver of the tow truck ended up reaching me about this.
Ended up just ordering a bushing from bushingfix.com, and a couple extra for a friend with an ‘07.
I had never heard of the prevalence of these failing u til this day!

Glad you got it fixed. My daughter's PT Cruiser has the same problem. One time a truck blew a tire right in front of me, took it down the middle and continued on. Pulled into a rest stop later and the shifter just moved around loosely. I had to set the parking brake, crawl under the car and manually move the selector on the side of the transmission as the tire busted the cable. Later on I realized that though I had a console shift, the column still moved, so twisting that would get the car through the gears until I got home. 1980s Buick.

Now that you mentioned this problem for our trucks, I better go check mine! My parking brake is out and I reckon the cable and parking fork are making up for it! Thanks!

My wife was wrong. I am right...sometimes.

Glad you got it fixed.
