Hey guys. my 2001 tahoe 2x4 trans stuck in 2nd gear yesterday. The transmission is not slipping, it simply wont shift into 1st, 3rd or OD. Is this an electronic issue? Anyone have any experience with this? I was told a trans shop or even autozone can plug in a scanner to read tranny codes. Any truth to this? Thanks.

It sounds like a shift solenoid. Mine use to hang up in 2nd every now and then. but it would quickly drop into 1st with a little throttle. but if yours is stuck in 2nd, my bet is on the solenoid. I'm not sure if autozone can read the trans codes. most trans shops can.

I had autozone run the codes and it threw a code for the 2-3 shift solenoid, the B solenoid. After buying it I went home, removed the shift linkage with a t 40 torx bit, removed all of the 14mm trans pan bolts, dropped the pan, remove the filter and had direct access to the solenoid a and b. removal was a simple electrical clip and a flat head to remove the retaining clip then pull the solenoid out. Lube the oring on the new one and push it into place, install retaining clip, plug in electrical connection, and at that point I decided to get another and replace the A solenoid as well. Try are only $28 and I would rather not do this again any time soon. Pretty easy. I will pick up another solenoid after work as well as a couple more quarts of dextron III ad finish the job.

No I didn't. No real point. If you have to replace one, you will see both of them side by side when you drop the pan. If I remember right, the B solenoid is the passenger side and the A is the driver's side. I simply replaced both.

If you search youtube for a video of the shift solenoid swap on a 4l60E you will find several videos.
