01 Tahoe dash lights intermittant at night

I have an '01 Tahoe. Sometimes at night the dash lights don't come on, sometimes they do. Sometimes when they don't come on at first, but after 30 seconds or so they come on. Once they are on they always stay on. This affects the dash, radio, HVAC controls, everything backlit. The mileage and the gear indicator do come on always. This used to happen maybe once a month but now is daily. Any ideas what it could be? The cluster has not been replaced to my knowledge, and the mileage and gear indicator always come on and are bright. The headlights and running lights come on as they should, it's just the dash lights.

Is it practical to upgrade to the later switch that has the headlight override? There have been a few times that I wished I could turn them off, but you can't on an '01.

You can turn the headlights off by pushing the dome override button 4 times in, i think, 5 seconds. You will hear the chime when this option is activated. But it resets everytime you turn the truck off.

Yea its 4 times you have to push it in. Also if your headlight switch is on and you do it you need to manually turn them off after doing the 4 times. But if you have the headlight switch off and you do it then i believe you need to turn the truck off then back on again to get the headlights on.
