02 ABS Module Buzzing

A while back my ABS module (small electical box under truck driver side) starter buzzing. So I crawled under the truck and I unplugged it. the dealership quoted me between $800 to $1300 depending if both the upper and lower parts of this module needed to be replaced.

I got another module from the junk yard and I was wondering if the top of the module can be replace without replacing the whole unit.

When it originally happened I was told it had to be replaced. So i got one from a junk yard. The only issue with that was that I was under the impression the whole brake system needed to be bled after replacement. To be honest I dont know how to do that.

After doing some more research today, I found out that I can replace the top part of the Control Module and I dont need to bleed the system. I also found a site that will repair the old part if I wanted to go that route. It wold cost about $90.00 and a week to get it back, door to door.
I also called the local Chevy dealer to confirm that I didn't need to bleed the system. The only thing they mentioned is that I might need to program the system, but he wasn;t sure about that. Either way, it should be cheaper than the $1300 price tag I was quoted to do the whole thing by them.

Now all I need is a hex screw tip that is short enough so I can remove the top of the module from the truck.

Did you get a quote on how much it would cost to have it "reprogramed"?Any freakin way they can get you to come back to the dealer and pay full price they will.

No i didn't get that info. To be honest I'm not sure its really necessary. I'll find out once I get it swapped out. Either way I cant imagine its the full price. If it is I'll shop around for another mechanic to do the programing.

Is your ABS and Brake light on? Mine came on and its the module under the truck where the brake lines connect to. Research said to take out the ground and reground it but it proved to be faulty according to GM. This module controls the ABS. Got junkyard estimate of $200.. Will probably need to be bled.

Not sure if this help but just thought I mention it just in case anyone else has my problem.

This is a known issue on our trucks. Don't buy a used one, it's going to fail like the original. Rebuild or buy new.

Let me ask you, what's the difference between a rebuild to just getting it off a crashed truck?
I called the company that repairs them and asked them if they did anything to improve the module and I was told no, they dont do anything special to improve the module or resolve the known issue.

hey just send it to the guy on ebay.he says in his auction "I have identified the failure and can repair and upgrade the module, providing a permanent solution to the problem for you"
