fyi, i dont plan on setting up a while system of pipes, i just want a loud muffler(close to a straight pipe sound) with the tip. i have an 04 vortec 4.8/v8 engine...suggestions?

I have the 5.3 and was originally going to go with a Super 40 Flowmaster, heard it would be the loudest, but changed my mind and went with a MagnaFlow. Not sure how the Flowmaster would have sounded, but I am extremely pleased with the MagnaFlow. The shop down here let me purchase it from them and they installed it all for about $170.

To me it sounds like a deep rich rumble. Definitely loud when you go vroom vroom and it will get attention, yet still quiet enough inside to hold a conversation easily while cruising. I can get the model number for you if you go the MagnaFlow way.

Good luck with the shopping.

I got a Flowmaster 50 mounted on stock piping but Im replacing it with a Magnflow same part # as the catback kit. Then get it all welded in place with a new tip from my local shop.

I just replaced the stock muffler with a thrust welded muffler, same tail pipe and all. Sounds awesome, very pleased with it. It's not the LOUDEST out there, because i like to be able to speak and hear each other in the cab. However it sounds good and its loud enough if you stomp it.

2003 5.3L

also note, the thrust muffler was $40 at advanced auto parts. I'm pretty sure they sell them at lots of auto parts stores.

the muffler shop charged $100 for the install, seems a little steep in retrospect, but i wanted it done and i didnt care.

What size inlet and oulets did you use? i have a 2002 with a 5.3 and want to use all stock piping, just replace the muffler.
Thanks

new ques.

well thanks for all the advice, appreciate it.

i do have another question that some of u might know the answer to..say i'm at a stop light, so the car is in idle..the sound of the car is awful! its been like this for a while now. i havnt cleaned the pipes in years. it kind of gives a disturbing rattle to the car. not sure if its just that dirty in there somewhere, or its not getting enough air compression thru the screen at the end of the cat converter. would cleaning out the exhaust be a good solution?

Dirty exhaust doesnt and wouldnt cause it to sound bad...you cant "clean" out your exhaust so a dirty exhaust doesnt even make sense. You may have a cat coming apart which means it would need to be replaced. I did just a muffler, tailpipe and tip on my tahoe...240 bucks and thats only because my tip was 40 bucks and i got the stainless MAC muffler which cost me 100 bucks. The normal version would have been 70. No its not a stainless tailpipe but oh well.
