Can they be taken off?

Yep they sure can. They are just stuck on with double sided tape.

and as far as taking them off, i heard i need a heat gun. Would a blow dryer do?

It was hot outside here last weekend. I just pulled my side molding right off. It was easy. It took a little effort to get all the tape off but I had both sides done in about an hour. I used Xylene to help loosen the tape. Worked well but I should have worn gloves. That's my recomendation.
